The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to prove the history of written cooking instructions far back into distant history, in fact as far back as ancient Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these old cookbooks were just simple pictorial recipes for preparing food.
In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to experts is a series of stone tablets in the Sumerian language describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel wonderful and blissful. Later on, there are some interesting books which date from the 14th Century ; a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, they are nothing to do with the indian food that we all know today, but instead descriptions of the types of food prepared for the rich people of that period. For the centuries that followed, the wealthy families of Wesstern Europe strove to offer the most exotic meals, and because of this the best cooks and their recipe collections became highly prized. Even so, it was during the 1800s that haute cuisine and recipe books became popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to assembling, testing, and recording recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. The introduction of the TV brought us TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on this recipe site. |
