The History of Recipes
It is possible to trace the history of written recipes far back into ancient history, in fact as far into history as the ancient Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, generally, these ancient records were just basic hieroglyphic instructions for food preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts are some ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel blissful. Later on, in The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius created a collection of documents showing how to cook the recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his scrolls, he recounts how the meals were split into appetizers, main course and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. He also recounts how the Roman cooks used a good variety of spices and herbs, including many that are still in use today like thyme, fennel and asafoetida. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us a variety of spices and herbs from the holy lands, including spices like parsley, basil and rosemary. These new foods and spices led to a torrent in recipe books, many of which are now in private collections. By the time we get to the 1900s, cookery books are greatly in demand mostly due to better eduction, people having increased spare time and disposable income. The arrival of television gave us TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting us all to access thousands of recipes such as those found on this site. |
