The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to prove the history of written cooking instructions back into distant history, certainly as far as the ancient Egyptians, and maybe further still. In practice though, generally, these old records were just very simple hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
Closer to modern times, there are a couple of cookery books which date from the 14th Century ; a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, these books are unconnected to the spicy food that is familiar to us all today, but rather recipes for the types of food cooked for the nobility of that period. By the time we get to the twentieth century, recipe publications are highly popular mostly due to increased literacy, more leisure time and disposable income. |
