The History of Recipes
It is possible to trace the history of written recipes far back into the far past, in fact as far as the Egyptians, and maybe further still. However, in the main part, these old cookbooks were just very simple pictorial recipes for preparing food.
Later on, in The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius created a number of documents showing how to cook the recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. In his publication, he tells us how the meals were split into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and desserts, a very modern way of dining. This early Roman chef informs us how the Romans made use of many different aromatic flavors, including many that are still in use today for example thyme, rue and parsley. During the following few hundred years, the families of Europe strove to lay on the best banquets, and as a result the best cooks and their collection of recipes were at a premium. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 19th century that fine cooking and cookery books became popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, trying out, and recording the recipes of their peers. The arrival of television gave us celebrity TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on sites such as this. |
