The History of Recipes

Written cooking instructions as a concept can be tracked back into distant history, in truth as far into history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that is, mostly, these ancient cook books were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing meals.

In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe found, according to historians are some stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`.

Later on, in The time of the romans 25BC a Roman scholar, called Apicius, assembled some scrolls which described recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his works, he recounts how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and afters, something that is very familiar to us today. Additionally, he informs us how the ancient Romans made use of a good variety of herbs and spices, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens such as basil, mint and dill.

Over the succeeding few centuries, the wealthy families of Europe tried to serve up the most extravagent banquests, and as a result the best chefs and their recipes were greatly in demand. However, it wasn`t until the 19th century that cooking and recipe publications became popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to collecting, verifying, and recording the recipes that were being prepared for the better households.

When we get to the 20th century, recipe publications are increasing in popularity as a result of increased literacy, people having increased leisure time and having more money.

The TV revolution brought us celebrity chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books.

Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on our site.
