The History of Recipes
We can track the history of `recipes` way back into history, in fact as far back into history as the early Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that is, generally, these early cookbooks were just very basic pictorial recipes for preparing food.
In fact, the most ancient recipe found, according to food historians are some tablets in Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel wonderful. Later on, there were some books from the fourteenth century ; a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these two books are nothing to do with the indian food that is popular today, but instead accounts of the types of meals on the menus of the upper classes of that period. For the next few years, the rich and powerful families of Europe strove to serve up the best banquets, and as a result the best cooks and their recipe collections could command a high salary. However, it was during the 1800s that fine cookery and recipe collections reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to collecting, testing, and writing down recipes to help cooks of their time. By the advent of the twentieth century, cookery publications are greatly in demand due to increased literacy, people having increased free time and having more money to spend. |
