The History of Recipes
Historians have proved the existance of recipes far back into the far past, certainly as far into history as pharonic Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that is, sadly, these ancient records were just basic pictorial instructions for preparing food.
Interestingly, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to food historians is a series of clay tablets in Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel exhilarated. During Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius created some documents describing recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. He recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into appetizers, entrees and afters, something we still use today. Additionally, he recounts how the Roman cooks made use of a wide range of herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs such as thyme, rue and dill. In the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought back many foods and spices from Arab cuisine, such as coriander, basil and rosemary. These new foods and tastes led to an outbreak in manuscripts on cookery, most of which are now in private cookery archives. By the arrival of the 1900s, cookbooks are in high demand, as a result of higher levels of literacy, people having more free time and having more money to spend. Like it or not, the introduction of television gave us cooking programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, permitting us all to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on the site you are now reading. |
We hope you enjoy this Carrot Soup (From My Garden) recipe.
