The History of Recipes
We are able to follow the history of written recipes far back into antiquity, certainly as far back into history as the ancient Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that is, sadly, these ancient cook books were just very simple hieroglyphic recipes for food preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe found, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of tablets in Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. As we move into Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius created some scripts detailing recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his works, he tells us how the roman meals were separated into appetizers, main course and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. This early Roman chef recounts how the Roman chefs made use of many different aromatic flavors, including many that are still in use today such as bay, fennel and dill. Later, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods and herbs from the East, including spices like coriander, basil and rosemary. These new foods and spices led to a torrent in cookery books, many of which are kept safe in academic collections. By the advent of the 1900s, cookbooks are highly popular mostly as a result of increased literacy, people having increased free time and a general increase in wealth. The revolution that is television gave us TV cooks and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on sites such as this. |
