The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as an idea can be tracked way back into the distant past, at least as far as the early Egyptians, and maybe even further. However, mostly, these early cook books were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years we have a couple of interesting books which were published in the fourteenth century ; a cookery book called `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these two books are unconnected to the indian curry that is served today, but rather descriptions of the types of food on the menues of the rich people of that time. In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many foods and herbs from Arab countries, including spices like basil and coriander. These new spices and herbs created a torrent in recipe books, the majority of which still exist in academic collections. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us cooking programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, allowing us all to access massive numbers of recipes like those on this web site. |
