The History of Recipes
We are able to read the history of meal recipes back into antiquity, certainly as far back into history as pharonic Egypt, and maybe even further. However, generally, these early cook books were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to academics are a few stone tablets in the Sumerian language describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel `blissful`. Later, we find two interesting recipe books published in the 1300s : a cookery book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these books are not about the curry that appears on menues today, but rather descriptions of the types of food eaten by the nobility of that period. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought back many new foods and spices from the holy lands, including spices such as basil and rosemary. These new spices and herbs caused a torrent in manuscripts on cooking, some of which still exist in academic collections. During the following few hundred years, the powerful and rich tried to serve up the most extravagent banquests, and consequentially chefs and their collection of recipes were much in demand. Even so, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that cooking and recipe publications became really popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to collecting, testing, and publishing recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. By the time we get to the 1900s, cookbooks are starting to become popular as a result of better eduction, increased leisure time and having more disposable income. The arrival of television gave us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this site. |
