The History of Recipes
We can read the history of meal recipes back into ancient history, in truth as far into history as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further. Having said that, these, early cook books were just primitive pictorial recipes for preparing meals.
In fact, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to academics are some ancient tablets in the Sumerian language describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel wonderful and blissful. Later on, in Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius created some scripts which described recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, he tells us how the roman meals were divided into appetizers, main meal and dessert, something that is very familiar to us today. Additionally, he tells us how the cooks of his times were skilled in the use of a wide range of aromatic flavours, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs such as bay, mint and parsley. Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought back many new foods, spices and herbs from Arab countries, such as coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. These new culinary innovations led to an explosion in recipe publications, some of which are kept safe in academic collections. By the advent of the twentieth century, cooking books are increasing in popularity due to more people being able to read, more spare time and having more disposable income. The introduction of the TV brings us celebrity chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to access massive numbers of recipes just like those on our site. |
