The History of Recipes
It is possible to follow the history of `recipes` far back into history, in truth as far as ancient Egypt, and maybe further still. In practice though, these, old recipes were just very basic pictorial instructions for preparing meals.
In fact, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts are some stone tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel blissful and exhilarated. Later on, in The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a few documents which described recipes prepared by the Romans. In his publication, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and desserts, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius recounts how the cooks of his times used a good variety of aromatic flavors, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs like thyme, mint and parsley. Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought back many new spices and herbs from the Middle-East, including parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas created an eruption in recipe books, some of which still exist in private cookery archives. For the decades that followed, the powerful and wealthy tried to lay on the most exotic meals, and as a result the best cooks and their collection of recipes became highly prized. However, it wasn`t until the 19th century that cookery and recipe publications became really popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, trying out, and writing down recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. By the advent of the twentieth century, cookery publications are increasing in popularity mostly as a result of better eduction, more free time and having more disposable income. The introduction of the TV brings us celebrity chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on sites such as this. |
