The History of Recipes
Recipes as a concept can be found far back into ancient history, in truth as far back into history as pharonic Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these ancient records were just very simple hieroglyphic recipes for meal preparation.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe found, according to Professor Solomon Katz, are a few ancient tablets in Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel exhilarated and blissful. Continuing our culinary historical journey, there were a couple of interesting cookery books which were published in the fourteenth century : one book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these are nothing to do with the curry that is popular today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals prepared by the chefs of the rich and powerful of that time. Over the succeeding few centuries, the upper classes tried to serve up the most extravagent meals, and as a result the best cooks and their collection of recipes were highly sought after. Even so, it wasn`t until the 1800s that fine cookery and recipe collections reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collecting, trying out, and writing down recipes common in their social group. When we get to the twentieth century, cookery books are increasing in popularity mostly as a result of increased literacy, people having increased free time and being a little richer. |
