The History of Recipes
Food historians have tracked the existance of recipes far back into the distant past, certainly as far as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. In practice though, generally, these old recipes were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history is a series of clay tablets in the Sumerian language which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel blissful. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times we have a couple of interesting cookery books dating from the fourteenth century - a book called `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these two books are unconnected to the indian food that is popular today, but rather recipes for the types of food prepared by the chefs of the rich people of that period. Over the next few centuries, the rich families of Europe tried to serve the most exotic banquets, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their recipes increased in prestige. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 19th century that haute cuisine and recipe collections became really popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, devoted much of their lives to collating, trying out, and writing down the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. The introduction of television brought us celebrity chefs and the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to access massive numbers of recipes like those on our site. |
