The History of Recipes
Recipes as a concept can be tracked far back into history, certainly as far back as the Egyptians, and maybe even further. However, these, old recipes were just primitive hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.
In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts is a series of clay tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel blissful and exhilarated. Continuing our culinary historical journey, we find a couple of interesting recipe books from the 1300s - a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these two books have no connection with the indian curry that is popular today, but instead accounts of the types of meals enjoyed by the upper classes of those days. Over the succeeding few hundred years, the powerful and rich houses competed with each other to serve the best banquets, and because of this chefs and their recipes were highly sought after. Nevertheless, it was during the 1800s that fine cooking and recipe collections became popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, spent years to collating, trying out, and publishing recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. The TV revolution gave us cooking programs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on sites such as the one you are reading now. |
