The History of Recipes
We can read the history of `recipes` far back into the distant past, in fact as far back into history as early Egypt, and maybe even further. However, sadly, these ancient cook books were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to historians are some clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel exhilarated and blissful. Later on, in Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius created a few documents showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, Apicius describes how the meals were divided into starters, entrees and dessert, a style of dining still practiced today. Additionally, he describes how the ancient Romans were skilled in the use of many different herbs, including a few you will know like thyme, fennel and dill. Later on, there were some books which appeared in the 1300s ; one book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, they are nothing to do with the curry that is popular today, but instead recipes for the types of meals on the tables of the rich people of the period. Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods and herbs from middle-east cuisine, including spices such as basil and coriander. These new herbs and spices led to a surge in publications on food, many of which are kept safe in private libraries. The introduction of the TV gave us TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to access thousands of recipes like those on the site you are now reading. |
