The History of Recipes
Historians have traced the existence of recipes back into the far past, in fact as far into history as the early Egyptians, and possibly even further. However, mostly, these ancient cookbooks were just simple hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe found, according to Professor Solomon Katz, is a collection of ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel exhilarated and blissful. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times we have some interesting books dating from the 1300s ; one book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these books are not about the indian curry that is familiar to us all today, but instead accounts of the types of meals enjoyed by the rich and powerful of the period. Over the next few centuries, the rich families of Wesstern Europe strove to serve up the most exotic banquets, and as a result cooks and their recipe collections were highly sought after. Even so, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that cookery and recipe books became popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to collating, testing, and recording the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. By the arrival of the twentieth century, cooking publications are greatly in demand due to increased literacy, more free time and being a little richer. |
