The History of Recipes
It is possible to follow the history of written recipes way back into antiquity, in truth as far back as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further than that. However, these, old cookbooks were just basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to historians is a collection of ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel wonderful and blissful. Progressing into The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius compiled a few scripts which described recipes cooked by the Romans. In his works, he recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into starters, entrees and afters, something we still use today. He also informs us how the chefs of Roman times made use of many different spices, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens such as thyme, rue and asafoetida. Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought us many new foods and herbs from middle-east cuisine, such as rosemary and coriander. The introduction of these new foods and spices led to an outbreak in manuscripts on cookery, most of which still exist in academic collections. By the time we get to the 20th century, cookery books were starting to become popular mostly as a result of higher levels of literacy, more free time and having more money. The introduction of the TV brings us celebrity TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on this web site. |
