The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to prove the history of recipes way back into distant history, in truth as far as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further. Interesting though that is, these, early recipes were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe found, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of clay tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel wonderful and blissful. As we move on, there were some recipe books which date from the 1300s - a book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, they have no connection with the indian curry that we all know today, but instead descriptions of the types of food cooked for the nobility of those days. Later, in the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought us many spices and herbs from the Middle-East, including spices such as coriander, parsley, and basil. These new spices and herbs was responsible for an explosion in books on cooking, the majority of which are kept safe in academic collections. During the following few hundred years, the rich and powerful families of Wesstern Europe competed with each other to offer the most exotic banquets, and as a result chefs and their recipes increased in prestige. Even so, it was during the 19th century that fine cooking and cookery books became popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to assembling, verifying, and writing down recipes of the day. The arrival of television brings us TV cookery programs and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing us all to search through thousands of recipes like those on our web site. |
