The History of Recipes
Written recipes as an idea can be found back into history, certainly as far as the early Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, these, early records were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
During the time of the Romans a man called Apicius compiled a few scripts detailing recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. In his publication, he tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and afters, a very modern way of dining. He also tells us how the Romans made use of a good variety of spices and herbs, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens for example thyme, rue and dill. Later on, in the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back a variety of spices and herbs from the East, including spices like basil and coriander. The introduction of these new tastes prompted an eruption in manuscripts on cooking, most of which are now in private collections. The arrival of TV brought us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on this site. |
