The History of Recipes
We can read the history of written recipes far back into antiquity, certainly as far back into history as ancient Egypt, and maybe further still. Having said that, these, early cookbooks were just very simple pictorial instructions for food preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered, according to historians are a few clay tablets in Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel blissful. As we move on, we have a couple of interesting recipe books which were published in the fourteenth century : one book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Don`t be fooled by the titles though, they are unconnected to the indian curry that appears on menues today, but rather recipes for the types of food prepared for the rich and wealthy people of the period. Later, in the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us many foods and spices from the holy land, including spices like parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new foods and spices was responsible for a torrent in recipe books, some of which still exist in private collections. During the following few hundred years, the rich families of Europe competed with each other to lay on the most extravagent meals, and consequentially the best chefs and their collection of recipes were greatly in demand. Notwithstanding that, it was during the nineteenth century that cookery and recipe publications became really popular. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted their lives to assembling, verifying, and writing down recipes for their fellow cooks to enjoy. The arrival of television brought us cooking programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes just like those on our site. |
