The History of Recipes
It is possible to trace the history of written recipes far back into the far past, in truth as far as the Egyptians, and possibly even further. However, mostly, these ancient recipes were just primitive pictorial recipes for food preparation.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to academics is a collection of stone tablets in the Sumerian language describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel `wonderful`. Moving our culinary historical trip onwards, we have a couple of interesting cookery books which were published in the fourteenth century - a cookery book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, these are nothing to do with the spicy food that is served today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals enjoyed by the nobility of the time. Over the next few hundred years, the rich families of the West tried to serve the most extravagent meals, and consequentially the best cooks and their recipes were at a premium. Notwithstanding that, it wasn`t until the 1800s that fine cooking and cookery books reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, devoted their lives to collecting, verifying, and recording popular recipes of the day. The arrival of TV brings us celebrity chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on the site you are now reading. |
