The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as a concept can be tracked way back into distant history, in truth as far back into recorded history as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further. Interesting though that is, sadly, these early cookbooks were just very simple hieroglyphic recipes for food preparation.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts are a few ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making those who drank it feel `blissful`. Continuing our culinary historical journey, there were two interesting cookery books published in the 1300s - a recipe book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, they have no connection with the spicy food that appears on menues today, but instead recipes for the types of meals served to the nobility of those days. Over the succeeding few centuries, the upper-class families of the West tried to serve the most extravagent banquests, and consequentially chefs and their recipes became highly prized. However, it was during the 19th century that cooking and recipe publications became popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to assembling, testing, and publishing popular recipes of the day. When we get to the 20th century, cookery publications were increasing in popularity as a result of better eduction, more spare time and disposable income. |
