The History of Recipes
Food historians have proved the existence of recipes back into the far past, certainly as far back as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these ancient records were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to academics are some clay tablets in the Sumerian language describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel wonderful and blissful. Closer to modern times, we have some books from the 1300s - a cookery book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these books have no connection with the indian curry that we all know today, but rather recipes for the types of food cooked for the upper classes of those days. During the next few hundred years, the upper-class families of Europe strove to serve the best banquets, and as a consequence, cooks and their recipes were at a premium. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 1800s that fine cooking and recipe books rose to prominence. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, trying out, and writing down recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. By the time we get to the twentieth century, cooking books are greatly in demand due to more people being able to read, more spare time and having more disposable income. Like it or not, the introduction of TV brings us TV chefs and the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on sites such as this. |
We hope you enjoy this Cheese Souffle Dip recipe.
