The History of Recipes
Food historians have tracked the existance of recipes back into the far past, at least as far back into history as ancient Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. However, in the main part, these early recipes were just basic pictorial recipes for meal preparation.
As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years we have a couple of interesting books which appeared in the fourteenth century - a book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, they are unconnected to the curry that appears on menues today, but rather descriptions of the types of food prepared by the chefs of the upper classes. By the arrival of the 20th century, cooking publications were in great demand, mostly as a result of higher levels of literacy, more leisure time and having more money to spend. |
