The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to track the history of recipes back into antiquity, in fact as far back into history as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further. Having said that, generally, these ancient cookbooks were just primitive hieroglyphic instructions for food preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe found, according to food historians is a collection of tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel blissful. Later on, in The time of the roman empire around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a collection of scripts showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his publication, Apicius tells us how the roman meals were split into hors d`oeuvres, main course and dessert, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius also informs us how the ancient Romans used many aromatic flavours, including some familiar names for example thyme, mint and dill. Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought back many foods and spices from the East, including spices such as parsley and basil. These new foods and tastes caused an explosion in books on cooking, some of which still exist in private cookery archives. The TV revolution gave us TV cookery programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to access thousands of recipes just like those on this site. |
