The History of Recipes
We can trace the history of written recipes far back into ancient history, in truth as far back as ancient Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, in the main part, these old cookbooks were just basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.
Later on, there were two interesting recipe books which appeared in the fourteenth century : a book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary titled `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are a little misleading though, they are nothing to do with the indian curry that is served today, but rather recipes for the types of food on the tables of the rich and wealthy people of those days. By the advent of the twentieth century, cookery books are starting to become popular mostly as a result of more people being able to read, people having increased free time and a general increase in wealth. |
