The History of Recipes
It is possible to trace the history of meal recipes way back into the distant past, at least as far as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these early cookbooks were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
As we move into The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius created some scripts showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by wealthy roman citizens. In his scrolls, he tells us how the roman meals were split into appetizers, main meal and dessert, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. He also informs us how the early Romans used many herbs and spices, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens such as thyme, rue and asafoetida. Later, in the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought back a variety of foods and herbs from the East, including spices such as basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new foods and spices led to an eruption in manuscripts on food, some of which are kept safe in academic collections. The revolution that is television brings us TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our web site. |
