The History of Recipes
We are able to trace the history of `recipes` back into the distant past, in truth as far back into recorded history as the early Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that is, mostly, these ancient cookbooks were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
As we move into The time of the romans around 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a number of scripts which described recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his works, he recounts how the meals were separated into starters, main meal and dessert, a style of dining still practiced today. He also tells us how the cooks of his times used a good variety of spices, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens for example thyme, fennel and dill. Later, in the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back many new spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, including spices like coriander, parsley, and basil. These new foods and tastes led to an explosion in recipe manuscripts, many of which still exist in private collections. The revolution that is television brought us celebrity chefs and the accompanying recipe books. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everyone to access thousands of recipes such as those found on this web site. |
