The History of Recipes
It is quite possible to trace the history of transcribed cooking instructions back into the distant past, at least as far back into recorded history as the Egyptians, and maybe further still. In practice though, in the main part, these early cookbooks were just basic pictorial instructions for meal preparation.
In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history are a few ancient tablets in Sumerian which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel wonderful and blissful. Later on, in The time of the romans around 25BC a roman called Apicius created a few documents which described recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. In his scrolls, he describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into appetizers, main course and desserts, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius also tells us how the cooks of Roman times used many different aromatic flavours, including many that are still in use today like bay, mint and dill. Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought us many new foods and herbs from Arab cuisine, including spices such as basil and rosemary. These new foods and tastes created an increase in cookery books, the majority of which are kept safe in private cookery archives. The arrival of television gave us celebrity TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes like those on our site. |
