The History of Recipes
We are able to track the history of `recipes` way back into ancient history, in truth as far back as the early Egyptians, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these ancient cook books were just very basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts are a few clay tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel exhilarated. As we move on, we have two interesting recipe books dating from the 1300s : a recipe book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Although the titles sound familiar, these are nothing to do with the indian curry that is served today, but rather descriptions of the types of food on the menus of the upper classes of the period. During the next few centuries, the rich families of Europe tried to offer the most exotic banquets, and as a result chefs and their collection of recipes were highly sought after. Even so, it wasn`t until the 1800s that fine cooking and cookery books really came of age. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, devoted much of their lives to collating, verifying, and writing down the recipes of their peers. By the advent of the 20th century, recipe books were starting to become popular due to increased literacy, leisure time and disposable income. |
