The History of Recipes
We are able to trace the history of written recipes back into ancient history, at least as far back into history as the Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. However, mostly, these ancient cook books were just simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history are some stone tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel `blissful`. As we move on, we have a couple of interesting books from the 14th Century - a book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these books have no connection with the indian curry that is popular today, but instead descriptions of the types of food on the menus of the rich and powerful of that period. During the next few centuries, the upper-class families of Europe competed with each other to offer the best banquets, and because of this cooks and their recipes increased in prestige. Even so, it wasn`t until the 19th century that fine cooking and recipe collections reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated the best years of their lives to assembling, verifying, and writing down the recipes of their peers. The revolution that is television brings us TV cookery programs and the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes just like those on our web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Cherries & Cream Parfaits recipe.
