The History of Recipes

It is quite possible to prove the history of recipes back into distant history, certainly as far as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further. Interesting though that is, in the main part, these old records were just primitive hieroglyphic instructions for preparing food.

Interestingly, the oldest recipe found, according to historians are a few stone tablets in Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel exhilarated.

During Roman times 25BC a Roman scholar, called Apicius, assembled some scrolls detailing recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his works, he describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. He also recounts how the Romans were skilled in the use of a good variety of herbs and spices, including a few you will know like bay, fennel and parsley.

In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of spices and herbs from the Middle-East, such as parsley and basil. These new foods and tastes caused an explosion in manuscripts on cookery, many of which still exist in private libraries.

During the succeeding few centuries, the wealthy families of Europe competed to lay on the most exotic banquets, and as a result cooks and their recipe collections were greatly in demand. However, it wasn`t until the 19th century that cooking and recipe collections really came of age. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, spent years to collecting, verifying, and writing down recipes to help cooks of their time.

By the arrival of the 1900s, recipe publications are highly popular mostly due to increased literacy, more spare time and having more money.

Like it or not, the introduction of television brought us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books.

And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, permitting everyone to access thousands of recipes such as those found on our web site.
