The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to track the history of recipes way back into antiquity, at least as far back as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, sadly, these old cookbooks were just primitive pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to Professor Solomon Katz, is a collection of stone tablets in Sumerian which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who tried it feel exhilarated. Progressing into Roman times 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a few scripts which described recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his works, he describes how the roman meals were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main course and afters, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius also describes how the Romans used a good variety of herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern cooks like bay, rue and parsley. Later on, in the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back many new spices and herbs from the holy lands, including coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas created a torrent in cookery books, most of which still exist in academic collections. The TV revolution brought us celebrity TV chefs and the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes such as those found on the site you are now reading. |
