The History of Recipes

We can track the history of meal recipes way back into the distant past, in truth as far as ancient Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that is, these, old recipes were just basic hieroglyphic instructions for food preparation.

In fact, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made people feel wonderful and blissful.

Progressing into The time of the roman empire 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a number of documents which described recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, Apicius recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and desserts, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius informs us how the ancient Romans were skilled in the use of many different aromatic flavors, including a few you will know like bay, rue and parsley.

Later on in the 1400s, the Crusaders brought back many new spices and herbs from Arab countries, including coriander, parsley, and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas caused an outbreak in books on cookery, the majority of which still exist in private libraries.

By the time we get to the 20th century, recipe books are increasing in popularity mostly due to more people being able to read, more leisure time and a general increase in wealth.

The introduction of the TV brought us celebrity chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them.

And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, permitting everyone to access thousands of recipes like those on sites such as this.
