The History of Recipes
Experts have tracked the existence of recipes way back into antiquity, in fact as far as the early Egyptians, and maybe even further. However, these, ancient records were just very simple hieroglyphic instructions for preparing food.
The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts are a few ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. As we move into Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a number of scripts describing recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. In his publication, he recounts how the meals were divided into hors d`oeuvres, main course and dessert, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. This early Roman chef recounts how the ancient cooks made use of many different herbs and spices, including some familiar names like basil, rue and dill. Moving on, there are two interesting books from the 14th Century ; a recipe book published under the title `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these books are unconnected to the indian food that is served today, but instead recipes for the types of meals prepared by the chefs of the rich people of those days. Later, in the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back many foods, spices and herbs from middle-east cuisine, such as basil and coriander. These new foods and spices created a torrent in recipe publications, some of which are now in private libraries. By the advent of the 1900s, recipe publications were in high demand, due to higher levels of literacy, people having more free time and disposable income. The revolution that is television brought us cooking programs and the spin-off recipe books. And that brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on our web site. |
