The History of Recipes
Experts have found proof that recipes existed far back into antiquity, in truth as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and maybe further still. Interesting though that maybe, sadly, these ancient records were just basic hieroglyphic instructions for preparing food.
Interestingly, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history are some clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Later on, in Roman times 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote some scripts which described recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his works, Apicius recounts how the roman meals were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main course and desserts, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius also recounts how the ancient cooks were skilled in the use of many spices, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens such as thyme, fennel and parsley. In the fifteenth century, people returning from the crusades brought back many new foods and herbs from Arab cuisine, including coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. These new spices and herbs created an increase in books on cooking, the majority of which are now in private libraries. Like it or not, the introduction of television gave us celebrity chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to access massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this recipe site. |
