The History of Recipes

It is possible to follow the history of written recipes far back into distant history, in truth as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and maybe even further. Interesting though that is, in the main part, these ancient cook books were just basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing meals.

In fact, the most ancient recipe found, according to food historians is a series of clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel `blissful`.

Later on, we find two interesting cookery books which appeared in the 1300s ; a cookery book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these books are not about the indian curry that is familiar to us all today, but rather descriptions of the types of food eaten by the upper classes of the period.

For the centuries that followed, the powerful and wealthy tried to serve the most exotic meals, and as a result chefs and their recipe collections could command a high salary. However, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that fine cooking and recipe collections really came of age. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to assembling, verifying, and recording recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them.

By the time we get to the 20th century, cookbooks are increasing in popularity mostly as a result of increased literacy, leisure time and having more money to spend.
