The History of Recipes

Written cooking instructions as a concept can be tracked far back into distant history, at least as far back into history as the early Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. However, mostly, these ancient cookbooks were just very basic hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for preparing food.

In an interesting twist, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts are some stone tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`.

Later on, in The time of the romans 25BC a roman called Apicius created some scripts describing recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. In his works, Apicius recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into appetizers, main meal and afters, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius describes how the cooks of his times used many different aromatic flavours, including a few you will know for example thyme, mint and dill.

Over the succeeding few centuries, the powerful and rich competed with each other to offer the most exotic banquets, and as a consequence, the best chefs and their recipe collections became highly prized. Even so, it was during the 19th century that formal cookery and recipe collections became really popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to assembling, trying out, and writing down the recipes of their peers.

When we get to the 20th century, cookbooks are in great demand, due to more people being able to read, people having increased spare time and disposable income.
