The History of Recipes

It is possible to trace the history of meal recipes back into the far past, in fact as far back into recorded history as pharonic Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. In practice though, in the main part, these early cook books were just primitive hieroglyphic instructions for preparing food.

The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to Professor Solomon Katz, is a collection of ancient tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who drank it feel wonderful and blissful.

Later on, in The time of the roman empire 25BC a man called Apicius created a few documents showing how to cook the recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. He describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into appetizers, main meal and dessert, a style of dining still practiced today. Additionally, he recounts how the cooks of his times were skilled in the use of a good variety of herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs such as basil, mint and parsley.

During the following few hundred years, the rich families of Wesstern Europe strove to serve the most extravagent banquests, and consequentially the best cooks and their recipe collections were highly sought after. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 19th century that haute cuisine and recipe collections really came of age. Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the US, spent years to collecting, verifying, and publishing the recipes that were being prepared for the better households.

The arrival of television brings us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books.

Which pretty much brings us up to date and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to access massive numbers of recipes such as those found on the site you are now reading.
