The History of Recipes
It is possible to follow the history of written recipes far back into the far past, at least as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further than that. Interesting though that maybe, these, early cookbooks were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
In fact, the oldest recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of stone tablets in the Sumerian language which describe the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel exhilarated and blissful. Progressing into The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius created some documents describing recipes prepared by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, Apicius tells us how the roman meals were split into starters, main meal and afters, a very modern way of dining. Aspicius describes how the early Romans made use of many different herbs and spices, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens for example bay, fennel and dill. For the centuries that followed, the powerful and rich competed with each other to serve up the most exotic meals, and as a consequence, cooks and their recipes increased in prestige. Even so, it was during the 19th century that cooking and cookery books reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the USA, dedicated years of their lives to collating, verifying, and recording recipes common in their social group. The introduction of the TV gave us TV cookery programs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to search through thousands of recipes like those on our web site. |
