The History of Recipes

We can track the history of written recipes far back into ancient history, in fact as far into history as pharonic Egypt, and quite possibly further than that. However, sadly, these early recipes were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing food.

In fact, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history is a series of tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel exhilarated.

Progressing into Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius created a collection of documents showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his scrolls, he describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into appetizers, entrees and afters, something we still use today. Aspicius recounts how the cooks of Roman times used a good variety of herbs, including some familiar names such as thyme, mint and parsley.

Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods and spices from Arab countries, including spices like coriander, parsley, and rosemary. These new herbs and spices led to a surge in cookery books, most of which are now in private collections.

By the advent of the twentieth century, cookery books are greatly in demand as a result of more people being able to read, people having increased free time and a general increase in wealth.

The introduction of the TV gave us TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books.

And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to access thousands of recipes such as those found on the site you are now reading.
