The History of Recipes
It is actually possible to trace the history of recipes back into history, in truth as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and maybe even further. However, generally, these ancient records were just primitive hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
The truth of the matter is, the most ancient recipe in existence, according to experts in ancient history is a series of ancient tablets in Sumerian which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel `blissful`. As we move on, there are two interesting cookery books which appeared in the 1300s - a book called `Forme of Cury`, and another titled `Curye on Inglish`. Surprisingly, these have no connection with the indian curry that is popular today, but rather descriptions of the types of food on the menus of the rich and wealthy people of the period. Later, in the fifteenth century, the Crusaders brought back many new foods and herbs from Arab countries, including spices such as coriander, parsley, and basil. These new foods and spices prompted an outbreak in recipe books, many of which still exist in academic collections. During the next few centuries, the wealthy families of the West tried to serve the most exotic meals, and as a consequence, chefs and their recipes increased in prestige. Nevertheless, it wasn`t until the 1800s that cookery and recipe collections became really popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Farmer in the US, spent years to assembling, testing, and publishing popular recipes of the day. The revolution that is television brought us celebrity chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing everybody to access massive numbers of recipes like those on this web site. |
