The History of Recipes
We can track the history of `recipes` far back into distant history, at least as far back as the early Egyptians, and maybe even further. In practice though, generally, these early records were just very basic hieroglyphic recipes for preparing food.
In fact, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to Professor Solomon Katz, is a series of clay tablets in ancient Sumerian which recount the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel blissful and exhilarated. Later on, in Roman times around 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a few documents detailing recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, Apicius tells us how the meals of wealthy Romans were split into starters, main course and desserts, something we still use today. Aspicius also tells us how the ancient Romans made use of many herbs and spices, including a few you will know for example bay, rue and asafoetida. Later on in the 1400s, people returning from the crusades brought back many spices and herbs from Arab cuisine, including spices such as parsley and basil. These new culinary innovations led to an increase in books on cooking, most of which still exist in academic collections. The introduction of the TV gave us TV cookery programs and the accompanying recipe books. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
