The History of Recipes
Written recipes as a concept can be found far back into the distant past, in truth as far as the ancient Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that is, these, old cookbooks were just basic hieroglyphic recipes for food preparation.
In an interesting twist, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts in ancient history is a series of tablets in the Sumerian language describing the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made those who drank it feel exhilarated. During the time of the Romans a roman called Apicius created a collection of scripts which described recipes prepared by the Romans. In his works, Apicius recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into appetizers, main course and dessert, something we still use today. Aspicius also recounts how the cooks of his times made use of many spices, including some familiar names for example basil, mint and asafoetida. Later on, in the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us many new spices and herbs from the Middle-East, including basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new culinary ideas led to a torrent in recipe publications, most of which are now in private cookery archives. The arrival of TV gave us celebrity chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which brings us neatly to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Kaesetorte (Cheesetorte) recipe.
