The History of Recipes
Written cooking instructions as a concept can be tracked back into ancient history, certainly as far as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and possibly even further. However, mostly, these early recipes were just very basic pictorial instructions for preparing meals.
Progressing into The time of the roman empire 25BC a man called Apicius assembled a collection of scripts showing how to cook the recipes enjoyed by his fellow Romans. In his publication, Apicius tells us how the meals were separated into hors d`oeuvre, main meal and desserts, a style of dining still practiced today. Aspicius also recounts how the Roman chefs made use of a good variety of spices, including many that are still in use today like basil, mint and dill. For the centuries that followed, the powerful families of the West strove to serve up the most extravagent meals, and because of this chefs and their collection of recipes were highly sought after. Even so, it wasn`t until the 19th century that cookery and recipe collections became popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collecting, testing, and recording recipes to allow everyone to enjoy them. The introduction of the TV brought us TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the internet revolution, allowing us all to search through massive numbers of recipes such as those found on this web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Karen's Meatless Chili recipe.
