The History of Recipes

We can track the history of meal recipes back into antiquity, in fact as far back into recorded history as ancient Egypt, and possibly even further. However, generally, these ancient cookbooks were just simple pictorial instructions for preparing food.

In fact, the most ancient recipe found, according to academics is a collection of tablets in Sumerian describing the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel blissful.

Progressing into Roman times around 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a number of scripts detailing recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his publication, Apicius recounts how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and desserts, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius also describes how the ancient Romans used a good variety of aromatic flavors, including a few that are still present in modern kitchens such as bay, mint and dill.

Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought us a variety of foods, spices and herbs from Arab cooking, including spices such as basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new foods and spices caused an eruption in cookery books, the majority of which are kept safe in private libraries.

The introduction of the TV brought us TV cooks and the accompanying recipe books.

Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to search through thousands of recipes such as those found on sites such as the one you are reading now.
