The History of Recipes
Academics have proved the existence of recipes way back into the far past, in truth as far back as the Egypt of the Pharoahs, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that is, these, old records were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe discovered so far, according to experts is a collection of clay tablets in the Sumerian language which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel wonderful and blissful. As we move into The time of the roman empire 25BC a man called Apicius created some scripts which described recipes cooked by his fellow Romans. In his works, he describes how the roman meals were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main meal and desserts, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Aspicius also tells us how the Romans were skilled in the use of many herbs and spices, including some familiar names for example thyme, fennel and parsley. As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times we have two books published in the fourteenth century - a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Despite their titles, these books are unconnected to the indian curry that is served today, but instead recipes for the types of meals on the tables of the upper classes of those days. In the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back many new foods and spices from Arab cuisine, including spices like coriander, parsley, and basil. The introduction of these new culinary ideas caused an eruption in books on cookery, the majority of which are kept safe in private collections. The introduction of television brings us celebrity TV chefs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our web site. |
