The History of Recipes
Experts have tracked the existance of recipes back into ancient history, at least as far into history as early Egypt, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, these, old recipes were just primitive hieroglyphic recipes for meal preparation.
Fascinatingly, the most ancient recipe found, according to experts in ancient history are a few tablets in Sumerian which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making drinkers feel `blissful`. As we move into The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a number of documents showing how to cook the recipes cooked by wealthy roman citizens. In his works, Apicius tells us how the roman meals were divided into appetizers, main meal and desserts, known in latin as `Gustatio, Primae Mensae and Secundae Mensae`. Additionally, he informs us how the cooks of his times used many spices, including a few you will know like basil, mint and parsley. In the 15th century, knights returning from the crusades brought back a variety of spices and herbs from the East, such as coriander, basil and rosemary. The introduction of these new herbs and spices led to an eruption in recipe books, the majority of which are kept safe in private cookery archives. The introduction of television brings us TV chefs and the recipe books that accompanied them. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of the internet, allowing everyone to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on this web site. |
