The History of Recipes
Transcribed cooking instructions as a concept can be found far back into ancient history, at least as far back as pharonic Egypt, and maybe even further. However, in the main part, these ancient cookbooks were just very simple hieroglyphic instructions for meal preparation.
Progressing into The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius created a collection of scripts detailing recipes cooked by wealthy Romans. He describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were separated into hors d`oeuvre, entrees and desserts, something we still use today. This early Roman chef describes how the Romans were skilled in the use of many herbs and spices, including some that we all recognise such as thyme, fennel and dill. In the 15th century, people returning from the crusades brought us many foods and spices from the East, including spices such as coriander, parsley, basil and rosemary. These new herbs and spices prompted a surge in books on cooking, most of which still exist in private collections. The arrival of TV gave us TV cookery programs and the demand for the spin-off recipe books. Which brings us neatly up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to access thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on our web site. |
