The History of Recipes
It is possible to follow the history of `recipes` back into distant history, in truth as far as the ancient Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, these, early records were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for preparing meals.
In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to historians are some tablets in ancient Sumerian describing the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making anyone who drank it feel wonderful and blissful. Later on, in The time of the romans around 25BC a Roman scholar, called Apicius, assembled some scrolls which described recipes prepared by wealthy Romans. He tells us how the roman meals were divided into starters, main meal and desserts, something that is very familiar to us today. He also tells us how the chefs of Roman times used a good variety of aromatic flavors, including a few you will know like basil, fennel and asafoetida. For the decades that followed, the wealthy families of Europe tried to lay on the most exotic banquets, and consequentially the best chefs and their collection of recipes were much in demand. Notwithstanding that, it was during the 19th century that fine cooking and recipe publications rose to prominence. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated their lives to collecting, trying out, and publishing recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. By the time we get to the 20th century, recipe books were increasing in popularity mostly due to better eduction, people having increased leisure time and having more money. |
