The History of Recipes
It is quite feasible to follow the history of transcribed cooking instructions back into history, in fact as far back as ancient Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these early recipes were just very simple hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for food preparation.
Fascinatingly, the oldest recipe discovered so far, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of ancient tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel blissful and exhilarated. Progressing into The time of the romans 25BC a man called Apicius compiled a few scripts describing recipes prepared by wealthy roman citizens. In his publication, Apicius recounts how the meals were split into hors d`oeuvres, entrees and dessert, a very modern way of dining. He also describes how the Romans made use of many different herbs and spices, including many that are still in use today such as thyme, fennel and dill. Over the next few centuries, the wealthy families of Wesstern Europe competed with each other to offer the most extravagent meals, and because of this the best chefs and their recipes increased in prestige. Even so, it wasn`t until the 1800s that fine cookery and recipe books reached a high level of popularity. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, verifying, and recording the recipes that were being prepared for the better households. The introduction of television brought us TV cookery programs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. And that neatly brings us to the present day and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everyone to search through massive numbers of recipes like those on our web site. |
