The History of Recipes

It is possible to follow the history of written recipes way back into the far past, at least as far back into recorded history as the ancient Egyptians, and potentially, even further back. Interesting though that is, in the main part, these old recipes were just primitive hieroglyphic recipes for preparing food.

In fact, the oldest recipe found, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of clay tablets in the Sumerian language which recount the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel wonderful and blissful.

Progressing into The time of the roman empire 25BC a roman called Apicius assembled a collection of documents describing recipes enjoyed by wealthy Romans. In his works, he describes how the meals of wealthy Romans were divided into hors d`oeuvre, main course and dessert, a very modern way of dining. This early Roman chef recounts how the Romans made use of many herbs, including a few that will be familiar to modern chefs such as bay, fennel and asafoetida.

Later on, we have a couple of interesting books dating from the fourteenth century - a book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these are not about the indian food that we all know today, but instead recipes for the types of meals prepared for the wealthy.

Later on in the 1400s, knights returning from the crusades brought back many spices and herbs from the Middle-East, including spices like coriander, parsley, and basil. These new foods and tastes prompted a torrent in publications on food, most of which are kept safe in private libraries.

For the centuries that followed, the upper-class families of Europe competed with each other to serve up the most exotic banquets, and as a result the best chefs and their recipes increased in prestige. However, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century that fine cookery and recipe books became popular. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated the best years of their lives to collating, verifying, and publishing popular recipes of the day.

By the time we get to the 20th century, cooking books are in high demand, mostly due to increased literacy, people having increased leisure time and a general increase in wealth.

The introduction of the TV brings us cooking programs and the accompanying recipe books.

Which brings us neatly up to date and the internet revolution, permitting everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on this web site.
