The History of Recipes
We can track the history of written recipes far back into ancient history, at least as far as the ancient Egyptians, and possibly even further than that. Having said that, sadly, these old cook books were just simple hieroglyphic instructions for preparing meals.
Later on, there were two interesting books which date from the 14th Century : a cookery book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary entitled `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, these books are not about the curry that is familiar to us all today, but rather descriptions of the types of meals on the tables of the upper classes of the time. By the advent of the twentieth century, cookery books were in high demand, mostly due to more people being able to read, people having more spare time and having more disposable income. |
