The History of Recipes
Food historians have proved the existence of recipes back into ancient history, at least as far back into history as the Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. However, mostly, these old cookbooks were just very simple pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform instructions for meal preparation.
As our culinary historical trip moves on a few more years we have a couple of recipe books which date from the fourteenth century - a recipe book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary called `Curye on Inglish`. The titles are somewhat misleading tho`, these are nothing to do with the curry that is served today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals served to the rich and powerful. In the fifteenth century, knights returning from the crusades brought back a variety of spices and herbs from the holy lands, including spices like coriander, parsley, and basil. These new foods and tastes caused an outbreak in manuscripts on food, some of which are now in academic collections. Like it or not, the introduction of television brings us TV cooks and the recipe books that accompanied them. And that brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to search through thousands of recipes like those on this web site. |
We hope you enjoy this Korean Eggplant Salad recipe.
