The History of Recipes
Recipes as a concept can be tracked back into history, in truth as far as pharonic Egypt, and possibly even further. Having said that, sadly, these early cook books were just basic pictorial, hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for food preparation.
As our culinary historical trip moves to more modern times there are some books which were published in the 14th Century ; one book titled `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, these are unconnected to the indian food that appears on menues today, but rather accounts of the types of meals prepared for the rich and wealthy people of the period. In the 15th century, the Crusaders brought back a variety of foods and herbs from Arab cooking, such as rosemary and coriander. These new foods and spices prompted an eruption in recipe publications, some of which still exist in private cookery archives. The introduction of television brought us TV chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us up to date and the invention of computers and the internet, permitting everybody to search through massive numbers of recipes like the ones you can find on our site. |
