The History of Recipes

We are able to track the history of written recipes far back into history, certainly as far back into history as ancient Egypt, and potentially, even further back. Having said that, generally, these old cookbooks were just basic pictorial recipes for preparing food.

The truth of the matter is, the oldest recipe in existence, according to academics are some stone tablets in ancient Sumerian which describe the baking of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made drinkers feel `blissful`.

Later on, in The time of the roman empire around 25BC a roman called Apicius wrote a few documents detailing recipes enjoyed by the Romans. In his works, he describes how the roman meals were separated into hors d`oeuvres, main course and afters, a very modern way of dining. This early Roman chef describes how the ancient Romans used a good variety of spices and herbs, including a few you will know such as basil, fennel and dill.

During the following few hundred years, the rich families of the West tried to offer the most extravagent banquests, and because of this the best cooks and their recipes were highly sought after. However, it wasn`t until the nineteenth century the formal cooking and recipe books became popular. The Famous Mrs Beeton in the UK, and the equally well-known Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to collecting, testing, and writing down popular recipes of the day.

By the advent of the 20th century, cooking publications were starting to become popular as a result of higher levels of literacy, people having more leisure time and disposable income.
