The History of Recipes
It is possible to read the history of meal recipes way back into history, in truth as far as the Egyptians, and quite possibly further than that. Interesting though that maybe, generally, these old records were just basic pictorial recipes for food preparation.
In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts is a series of tablets in Sumerian which show the making of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as having made anyone who tried it feel wonderful. Later, there were two interesting cookery books from the fourteenth century ; a recipe book called `Forme of Cury`, and another, similary named `Curye on Inglish`. Amusingly, they are not about the indian curry that is familiar to us all today, but instead recipes for the types of food eaten by the upper classes of those days. For the decades that followed, the rich and powerful families of Europe tried to lay on the best banquets, and consequentially the best cooks and their recipe collections became highly prized. Even so, it was during the nineteenth century that cookery and recipe books became popular. The Famous Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Merritt Farmer in the US, dedicated years of their lives to assembling, testing, and writing down recipes that were common in the better off homes of the day. By the time we get to the 1900s, cookery publications are increasing in popularity due to better eduction, people having increased free time and disposable income. |
