The History of Recipes
Written recipes as an idea can be observed far back into the distant past, at least as far back as early Egypt, and maybe even further. Interesting though that maybe, in the main part, these ancient records were just simple hieroglyphic or cunieform recipes for meal preparation.
In fact, the most ancient recipe discovered, according to experts in ancient history is a collection of clay tablets in the Sumerian language which show the preparation of bread which is then used to make a drink, quite possibly a form of beer as it is recorded as making people feel `exhilarated, wonderful and blissful`. Later, we find two interesting cookery books which were published in the 1300s : a book entitled `Forme of Cury`, and another named `Curye on Inglish`. Perhaps surprisingly, they are not about the spicy food that we all know today, but instead descriptions of the types of meals on the menus of the nobility of that time. For the decades that followed, the upper classes tried to serve the most extravagent meals, and consequentially chefs and their collection of recipes increased in prestige. Nevertheless, it was during the nineteenth century the formal cooking and recipe books reached a high level of popularity. Mrs Isabella Beeton in the UK, and the equally famous Fannie Farmer in the USA, dedicated their lives to collating, verifying, and recording recipes common in their social group. The arrival of television gave us celebrity chefs and the demand for the accompanying recipe books. Which pretty much brings us to the present day and the invention of the internet, allowing us all to search through thousands of recipes like the ones you can find on the site you are now reading. |
